Fertilizer Runoff Impacts Streams & Rivers, EPA Study Shows

The Farm Futures website published an article last week about the serious issue of fertilizer runoff into streams and rivers. The article references a recent study from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) showing that streams and rivers are suffering from fertilizer runoff.  In fact, the article states that “55% of the nation’s rivers and streams are in poor condition for aquatic life” and cites nitrogen and phosphorous runoff as culprits.

The current study, published Feb 2013, is called, “National Rivers and Streams Assessment 2008-2009: A Collaborative Survey” and shares data collected from almost 2,000 sites across the country. The study also compares data from a previous study called “Wadeable Streams Assessment” (collected in 2004) and shows that the negative changes (current study versus prior) were “statistically significant”  in stream conditions.

The Farm Futures article provides summary and detail information at the national level and across three regions (West, Plains, East).  The full 120+ page EPA survey document discusses the need for management action in areas where the rivers and streams are already in poor biological condition.  Another survey is planned for 2013-2014 and will continue to look at trends in water quality and management actions to address these serious issues.
